On Sunday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport claimed that Gilmore and the Minnesota Viking have reached an agreement on a one-year, $10 million contract.
According to NFL.com's Kevin Patra, the 33-year-old Gilmore would have been an excellent addition to whatever team he signed with, but he would be especially useful to the Vikings, who are severely lacking in cornerback depth.
In the wake of rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson's untimely death and rookie quarterback Mekhi Blackmon's ACL rupture on training camp's opening day, the Vikings have made a number of alterations at the position. They acquired Fabian Moreau, a seasoned player, and just swapped Andrew Booth, a former second-round pick, for Nahshon Wright.
Gilmore will now be a part of the Vikings' starting cornerback group, which also features Josh Metellus, Shaquill Griffin, and Byron Murphy. Additionally, he will reunite with former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores.
While playing for the Patriots from 2017 to 2020, Gilmore was twice named to the All-Pro team and was also named the 2019 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year. But while in Boston, he was at the height of his career.
Gilmore is about to join his sixth NFL club, his fifth in as many seasons, after beginning his career with the Buffalo Bills for five years. Last season, he started every game for the Dallas Cowboys and had 68 tackles, 13 pass breakups, and 2 interceptions, enough for a 74.4 overall grade from PFF.
Gilmore has finally settled into his new digs after spending the offseason living it up in the greatest possible location and ranking sixteenth in Gregg Rosenthal's Top 100 free agents.
